Movie star collection

Before she went into hiding, Anne had started collecting postcards and pictures of movie stars. In May 1939, she wrote to her American pen pal, Juanita, that her 'collecting picture cards' numbered around eight hundred. She brought her collection with her to the Secret Annex.

‘Thanks to Father — who brought my entire postcard and movie-star collection here beforehand — and to a brush and a pot of glue, I was able to plaster the walls with pictures. It looks much more cheerful.’

One of the pictures is of Norma Shearer (1902-1983), a popular Hollywood movie star from the nineteen thirties. The original photo was taken by George Hurrell for the film Romeo and Juliet (1936), in which Norma Shearer played Juliet.
