Map of the Normandy coast

The liberation of Western Europe

On 6 July 1944, the Allied Forces landed in France. It was the start of the liberation of Western Europe. In her diary, Anne wrote:

‘"This is D-Day," the BBC announced at twelve. "This is the day." The invasion has begun!’

Otto Frank cut this map of the Normandy coast from the front page of De Telegraaf of 8 June 1944 and pinned it to the wall in the Secret Annex. He used hat pins to keep track of the victories of the Allies.
