Overview

The red-checked diary

Anne’s first diary.

Just before the family went into hiding, Anne started writing in the red-checked diary she got for her thirteenth birthday on 12 June 1942. When this first diary was full, she continued writing in notebooks.

‘I'll begin from the moment I got you, the moment I saw you lying on the table among my other birthday presents. (I went along when you were bought, but that doesn't count.)’

The red-checked diary and Anne’s other original diaries are on permanent display at the museum.
