Friends

In the summer of 1937, Anne Frank and her friends played at the house of another girl who lived at Merwedeplein 3: Hanna Toby. She was two years old and had come from Berlin with her parents. From left to right: Hanneli Goslar, Anne Frank, Dolly Lemon, Hanna Toby, Barbara and Sanne Ledermann. Anne, Hanneli, and Sanne were best friends. Barbara was in Margot’s class. Their parents had all come to Amsterdam from Berlin and were friends with Anne’s parents. Hanna Toby’s parents were divorced. Her mother remarried in 1938, and they travelled back to Berlin, where her stepfather was a rabbi.
